CELEBRATE FAT TUESDAY ON FEBRUARY 9TH

Have a Fat Tuesday Celebration With The Kids

By Sharon Rosenthal, www.camarillo.macaronikid.com (reprint from last year) February 7, 2016
Every February in the city of New Orleans they celebrate the holiday of Mardi Gras. The celebration reaches a fever pitch on "Fat Tuesday"—the final feasting before the fasting of Lent, which this year falls on Tuesday, February 9, 2016.

Fat Tuesday is also called Shrove Tuesday, a name that comes from the practice of shriving or purifying yourself through confession prior to Lent. While you might not be living in New Orleans, there are ways that you can teach your kids about the holiday without hopping on a plane.

Another tradition of the holiday is to wear colored beads in Mardi Gras colors like a deep purple and to wear masks. Here are some Mask crafts you can make with the kids:

Duct Tape Mardi Gras Mask (instructions provided by Michelle Melnik)
What you need:
  • Colored duct tape (Mardi Gras colors are purple, green, and gold)
  • Pipe cleaners or plastic straws
  • Scissors
  • Mask template (optional)
  • Hole punch
What you do:
  1. Put strips of duct tape on a table, sticky side up. (Note: this step is easier if you tear the tape rather than using scissors.)
  2. Cover all the sticky duct tape with more duct tape, sticky side down, so that it's no longer sticky.
  3. Draw or trace the make using a pen or Sharpie.
  4. Cut out your mask.
  5. Make a small fold where you want the eyes and cut the fold.
  6. Place another strip of duct tape on the table sticky side up.
  7. Place a pipe cleaner or straw on the duct tape, then roll the tape around the pipe cleaner or straw to make a handle.
  8. Make a small hole on the side of your mask and add your handle.
  9. Add duct tape to the back to keep your handle in place.
  10. Decorate your mask with feathers, stickers, or different shapes made from duct tape.
  11. To attach the decorative items, roll a small piece of duct tape so that it's sticky all around and use it to adhere your items.
Paper Plate Mardi Gras Mask (instructions provided by Cheri Kotenbeutel)
What you need:
