MACARONI READS: THE RAT PACK OF HOLLYWOOD

Two Fun Picture Books For Your Kids

By Sharon Rosenthal, www.camarillo.macaronikid.com November 11, 2012
This week I got the chance to check out some really fun and different picture books for my kids, called The Rat Pack of Hollywood: Making the Band (ISBN 978-0-615-62511-9) and The Rat Pack of Hollywood: First Concert in Space (ISBN 978-0-9882523-1-8).

I read the first two “Rat Pack of Hollywood” books with my two daughters (ages 7 & 5).  They really enjoyed both books.  In fact the next day my 7 year old enjoyed it so much she asked to read it by herself.  The books are easy reads with big print and wonderful illustrations.  The books are about a world filled with only rats and their rock and roll band. My 5-year-old who loves anything to do with Space, loved the The Rat Pack of Hollywood: First Concert in Space best of all just because she loved the idea of a space concert.

Both books are 32-pages, and are a hard cover picture book that is written & illustrated by Michael Houbrick. Michael, actually contacted me through a Facebook friend and he himself knows Hollywood because he is a former Hollywood talent agent.

These stories feature a group of rats from Hollywood that form a band and travel around the world in their short, yellow tour bus that has a hunk of cheese on top. The rats want to become the biggest band in the universe. The celebrity rats are able to use their superstar status to stop and help others along the way. Which shares a really great message with kids, to help out your friends rather than competing with them. That teamwork is what is important in any group.

THE MAKING OF THE BAND
The first book in the series is “Making the Band.”  It introduces the band and tells how they formed. The members are Sunny, Jensen, Ana, Lil’ Jojo, and Marjie. It also introduces their manager Bernie and Randoon, the comedian that travels with them.  It ends with a moral, told by Bernie,  “You can have all the cheese in the world but what kind of world  is it if you don’t share it with other rats who have none?”

FIRST CONCERT IN SPACE
The second book in the series is “First Concert in Space.”  It tells of the bands adventure  to perform a concert in space.  They travel to the planet backwards where everyone talks backwards and everything is written backwards.  Their concert is of course a tremendous success. It ends with a moral, told by Bernie,  “On the outside we may all look like a different kind of rats.  But, deep down inside, we’re actually all the very same.”
