CHRISTMAS TREE DISPOSAL IN CAMARILLO, OXNARD & VENTURA

Get the Scoop ON How to Dispose of Your Tree After Xmas

By Sharon Rosenthal, www.camarillo.macaronikid.com December 21, 2014
Christmas is in just a few days and New Year's is next week. Every year I like to run an article about what to do with your old trees and information on how to get rid of all that wrapping paper, you have accumulated during the holidays.

Here is information on what you can do to properly dispose of it in the cities of Camarillo, Oxnard or Ventura.

FOR CAMARILLO RESIDENTS
E.J. Harrison & Sons and the City of Camarillo make it easy for you to recycle your Christmas tree. All you need to do is remove the ornaments, hooks, lights, tinsel, bows, nails, and tree stand. Cut the tree into four-foot sections and place it in your yardwaste barrel on your scheduled pickup day. Now E.J. Harrison & Sons even accepts flocked Christmas trees for recycling.

Collected trees will be processed into various sizes of mulch. The material is used by Agromin to make several products that benefit our farmlands, orchards, nurseries, and our own gardens.

As another special post-holiday service, Harrison customers may put out twice the amount of trash at no extra charge during the two weeks after Dec. 25. Please make sure the trash is in bags alongside your trash bin. You may also put out extra recyclables, but please flatten all boxes and place them alongside the recycling bin beside any extra trash in bags.

For additional information about the City's Christmas tree recycling program, please call the Recycling Coordinator at (805) 388-5392 or click HERE.

FOR OXNARD RESIDENTS
After the holiday season, don’t throw away your real Christmas tree in the trash.  Real Christmas trees are biodegradable, which means they can be easily reused or recycled for mulch and other purposes. The City of Oxnard is offering three convenient recycling options and tips on what to do with your tree after the holidays.

Here are 3 convenient options to recycle your Christmas tree:

Option #1:
Place your tree in your Yard Waste Cart on the appropriate alternate week collection schedule. There is no additional charge for this service. Trees must be cut down to fit into the cart with the lid closed. No flocked trees will be taken.

Option #2:
Free Drop-off location is available Friday, December 26, 2014 – Saturday, January 17, 2015
Del Norte Regional Recycling & Transfer Station
111 South Del Norte Blvd. (Between Sturgis Road & Fifth Street)
Monday – Saturday, 7 AM - 4PM. Closed Sundays.

Option #3:
Place your Christmas tree curbside by 6 AM on your collection day starting
Monday, December 29, 2014, through Thursday, January 15, 2015.
For trees placed curbside after January 15, 2015, there will be a charge of
$10.00 per tree.

Multifamily Collection (Condos/Apartments)
Contact your property manager or homeowners association for further direction.
As a reminder, please remove tree stands, plastic bags, lights, ornaments, any nails, tinsel and metal rod supports from the trees. There will be a charge of $10 per tree for flocked, painted or fireproofed trees. This year’s collection will be delayed one day for the holidays and the rest of the week.

GENERAL VENTURA COUNTY POLCY
Christmas tree recycling programs are offered annually to unincorporated area residents paying for residential solid waste collection services. This service is provided to single-family residences, multi-family residences, and residences in areas not provided with curbside green material collection programs.

Although holiday tree recycling is usually free, there may be a small fee charged to pick up trees placed at the curb or trees collected after a company’s holiday tree recycling program is over. Multi-family units such as condominiums or apartments are usually provided with holiday tree recycling at no extra cost. Residents are encouraged to call their complex manager or Home Owners Association (HOA) for details.

Residents in the unincorporated area of the County with curbside green material recycling programs should cut un-flocked trees into pieces and place them in their green materials bin. Tree stands, nails, metal rods in the trunks, icicles and all ornaments must be removed. Trees will be collected on regular recycling days for several weeks after Christmas. Call your residential solid waste collector to ensure you meet the deadline for free collection. Fees are usually charged to pick up whole trees for recycling after the holiday collection program has ended.

Residents of the unincorporated area of the county that DO NOT have curbside green materials collection should call their residential solid waste collector for holiday tree recycling information or tree drop-off locations in their area. Each company handles holiday tree recycling differently – so be sure to call them if information has not been provided on your most recent billing statement.

Note:  Flocked, decorated or artificial trees will not be included with green recycling and will be picked up with trash.  If a tree does not fit in your trash container, please call your residential solid waste collector for special arrangements.  If available, you may use your free bulky item pick up.
