Celebrate Purim With Hamentashen and Other Local Events

The official cookie of Purim, celebrated this week on March 20-21, 2019 is called the Hamantashen and it is made out of plain cookie dough with a dot of jam or jelly in its center and it is folded into a triangle and then baked. The cookie is shaped like a triangle to resemble the villain in the Jewish story of Purim, Haman's hat. Keep reading for an easy recipe you can use to make Hamentashen with your kids!

EASY HAMENTASHEN RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of flour
  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter (or margarine)--softened
  • 2 eggs (beaten)
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • Jelly: Apricot, cherry or raspberry preserves; lekvar prunes, chocolate chips, or nutella

Instructions:

  1. Sift the 4 dry ingredients together.
  2. Work in butter to dry ingredients.
  3. Add the eggs and orange juice.
  4. Mix all.
  5. The mixture should be hard to mix. When you knead it together with your hands, it should not be sticking to them. If it does stick to your hands or looks wet, then add a little more flour.
  6. Refrigerate at least two hours (or overnight).
  7. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  8. Grease cookie sheet.
  9. On floured cookie board, flatten dough with a rolling pin.
  10. Next, use a cup or glass to make a circles (it should have around a 6-inch circumference).
  11. Put filling (apricot, cherry or raspberry preserves; lekvar prunes, chocolate chips, or nutella) in center.
  12. Fold three sides up to make it look like a triangle.
  13. Make sure most of the filling is in the dough.
  14. Place on sheet and bake for about 15 minutes (or lightly browned).
