From Libraries to Reading Clubs

Every summer I love to sign the kids up for all the summer reading clubs where they offer free activities related to reading to challenge kids this summer. 

CAMARILLO LIBRARY 2015 SUMMER READING PROGRAMMING

Annual Teen Storytime Workshop: June 6 at 10am-12noon in the Community Room.                             Sign-up in the Children’s Room or call the Children’s Desk at 388-5755.

Theme: Read to the Rhythm
  • This years summer reading program begins June 14 and ends on August 31, 2015.
  • Read 15 hours and receive a foldable flying disk and coupon to the Friends Bookstore. 
  • Fill out your log and return to the library for prizes.

  • K-8 Video Game Design is June 13 from 12 to 2pm in the Community Room Learn to build 3D video games and simulations by creating worlds, adding objects, programming behavior of characters, and more. Space is limited.
  • Ye Ole Music Festival is Monday June 15 at 2pm in the Children’s Room: Come lads and lasses for crafts, games and songs from merry olde England!
  • Camarillo Academy of Performing Arts presents "An Afternoon of Dance!" on Monday, June 22 at 2pm in the Community Room. Come watch some of our favorite dances, then learn one of your own!
  • Bricks for Kidz: Tuesdays at 2pm in the Community Room June 23, July 14, August 4. Come build fun and exciting motorized LEGO® models. **Space is limited come early**
  • Summer Sing-along with TJ Zeiler  Tuesday, June 9 at 7pm in the Pirate Ship

  • Summer Storytimes in the Pirate Ship Mondays & Tuesdays at 10am from June 15-August 11;  presented by our trained, talented teen volunteers
  • Share a favorite book with our PAWs for Reading teams every Mondays & Tuesday at 2pm from June 22-August 11 in the Story Corner.
  • Musical Mondays: Mondays at 2pm June 29-July 27 in the Children’s Room. Come for crafts, songs and games with fun themes such as under the sea, puppets and dragons!
  • Game Time Tuesdays: Tuesdays at 2pm June 23-July 28 in the Children’s Room. Enjoy LEGO bricks, board games, and all sorts of trivia to keep everyone entertained! 
  • Tuesday Night Family Storytime, starting June 16, at 7pm in the Pirate Ship. Join our trained, talented volunteers for songs and stories.

VENTURA COUNTY LIBRARIES SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Ventura County Library’s  Summer Challenge's theme is Read to the Rhythm and the program runs from June 1 to August 8th.

How to Participate  
Step 1: 
Read for 30 minutes  

Step 2: 
Attend a library event 

Step 3: 
  • For Elementary Age: Tell library staff about the last book you read 
  • For Pre-readers: Draw a picture of a favorite book character 
  • For Teens : Write a library poem or rap 
Step 4:
Sing to a library staff member 

Step 5: 
Do a science activity 

Step 6: 
Play music and dance for 15 minutes 

Step 7:
  • Kids and Teens: Read to someone who can’t 
  • Pre-readers: Learn and recite a nursery rhyme 
Completing the Work Sheet
Step 1: Select activities to do and write the letter of each completed activity in a musical note OR for teens in a musical flame. Activities may be repeated more than once. 

Step 2: When 10 activities are completed, bring this form to any Ventura County Library. 

Step 3: You may pick a prize (while supplies last). Forms will be entered into an end-of-summer prize drawing.

Step 4: Ask for another form & keep going! You may turn in 1 form per week, a maximum of 10 forms between June 1-August 8.

OXNARD PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM – READ TO THE RHYTHM 
Clash those cymbals and bang those drums! It’s time to READ TO THE RHYTHM @ The Oxnard Public Library. This year we are pleased to present our Summer Reading program once again for children, offering reading clubs, special events and story times related to our musical theme. The program is open for babies through children entering the 6th grade, and reading incentives will be rewarded upon completion of reading goals. Even infants or children too young to read can participate by having an adult read to them. Registration for the free summer reading club begins Monday, June 22nd and the program continues through August 22, 2015.

Local Reading Programs

Updated for 2015 -->Ventura County Fair Read and Ride Program - The Ventura County Fair invites students to earn free carnival rides through our reading program, “Read & Ride” for local kindergarten through 8th grade students. Students are encouraged to read books to earn carnival ride passes for the 2015 Fair.

Updated for 2015--> Barnes & Noble Imagination Destination - This summer reading program starts in May, and  Barnes & Noble gives your child the ability to earn a FREE book after reading 8 books and keeping track of them in a READING LOG that they turn in at the local stores in Ventura and Thousand Oaks

Chuck E. Cheese Year Round Reward Calendars- The Reading Reward Calendar, has you earn 10 FREE tokens every time your child reads for 2 weeks in a row. Just fill out the FORM and bring it in to claim your free token. Redeem this certificate and get 10 FREE tokens. EXCLUSIONS: Child(ren) must be present to redeem. No more than 1 of any free token offer can be used per child, per day. Only at participating locations. Food purchase is required. Offer expires 12/31/15.

National Reading Programs

American Girl Reading Palooza
- The American Girl Reading Palooza goes from May to August and the American Girl website includes pages of fun with ideas, quizzes, events, and more for kids.

Bad Kitty Book Club - Sign up for the BRAND NEW Bad Kitty Book Club, where parents will get exclusive updates, information about Nick Bruel's bestselling series for kids aged 7-10 years old, fun games and activities, and much more at www.badkittybooks.com/club.

Book Adventure –  Book Adventure is a fun, free way to motivate your child to read! Kids in grades K-8 can search for books, read them offline, come back to quiz on what they’ve read, and earn prizes for their reading success. Start your reading adventure now.

Junie B Jones Reading Club - Get a FREE starter Kit HERE  that includes a copy of Junie B Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus, Activity sheets and a membership ID card that you download for the kids and print out.

Kicks Off May 4 -->Scholastic Summer Challenge - Register kids, age 4-14. The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online reading program for children (May 4 - September 4, 2015). Teacher registration begins April 6, 2015. Sign up your district, school, classroom, or children and get ready to read all summer.

Programs like these are a great way to encourage our children to continue reading throughout the summer months with fun, games and rewards.
