MACARONI READS: THE BUDDING BIOLOGIST BOOK SERIES

A Macaroni Kid Review of the Book "Am I an Insect?"

By Michelle Schwab January 13, 2013
I've discovered a really great book series that I'm excited to share with Macaroni Kid readers!

Kristine Callis-Duehl, a University of Florida PhD biologist, and artist-illustrator Katy Catronovo teamed up to create a beautifully illustrated, scientifically accurate children’s series called Budding Biologist.

Both women were new mothers when they noticed a scarcity of scientifically accurate children’s books that were also visually appealing.  So, they decided to create their own engaging, entertaining and educational children’s books.

Am I an Insect? Is the first book in The Budding Biologist series of children’s books dedicated to stimulating interest in science.

The format of the book is simple: one page shows an illustration while the page next to it asks a simple question.

I loved how the book provides clear specific answers designed to explain scientifically accurate concepts in simple, easy-to-understand terms.

I know I’m looking forward to seeing more books in the Budding Biologist series!  Fortunately, we don't have to wait too long.  Their next book, Where Do I Live?, is expected out this Spring.

For more information on Am I an Insect? or Where Do I Live?, go to the Budding Biologist website: www.BuddingBiologist.com where you can watch a short video to see the authors explain the book’s concept.  The website also offers free lesson plans for Am I an Insect?  and the authors have done a wonderful job of including lesson plans in Art, Language,  Math, Music, Physical Education, and Science.

The book can be purchased at Budding Biologist or on Amazon for $11.99.

You can also follow Budding Biologist on Facebook.
