Volunteers of all ages are wanted for a planting project for the Outdoor Interpretive Nature Center located at

The District is seeking volunteers, groups and individuals, to participate in planting the flora for the nature garden at the Outdoor Interpretive Nature Center between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm. Participants are not required to stay the entire duration however, it would be helpful if participants committed to a minimum of two hours.

How to Sign UP
  • To sign up contact Matt Parker, Parks Supervisor at mparker@pvrpd.org or call (805) 482-5396.
  • Specify the number of people attending as well as the time period planned for volunteering.
The overall Nature Center project began in the fall of 2014 to include a teaching deck, interpretive trail, nature-based play equipment, nature garden, and water table. The nature garden is comprised of planting local flora to include drought resistant species and those native to the area to be utilized as an educational environment for the community. The garden is over 2,000 square feet in size overall and will be located along the 600 foot interpretive trail, around the teaching platform area, and entrance way.

The next phase, after the planting, is the addition of identification signage for patrons along the trail and
within the site as an instructional source for local schools, community groups, and the public. The District received funding from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the National Recreation and Park Association to develop the Nature Center.

Volunteers will be participating in an integral part of this community asset. The District, over time, will be adding to the area as programming and needs grow for nature-based learning environments. The official grand
opening of this facility will be April 25, 2015.

As volunteers arrive on site they are to check-in with the Site Coordinator at the registration table and will be directed to a section of the park. The entire planting area will be flagged and color coded. Volunteers will be assigned to areas for specific planting duties.

This volunteer project involves bending, stooping, sitting, standing, kneeling, grasping, digging, lifting, twisting and walking on uneven surfaces.
