CSU Channel Islands (CI) will host the 10th Annual Children's Reading Celebration and the 38th Annual Young Authors' Fair on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the John Spoor Broome Library.

FAMILIES RSVP HERE

The program is sponsored by the John Spoor Broome Library, Ventura County Reading Association (VCRA), the CI English Program, Four Pillars Chapter of Mortar Board, and the Ventura County Office of Education.

The featured author this year is René Colato Laínez, with his picture book I am René, the Boy/Soy René, El Niño.  René is a bilingual teacher at Fernangeles Elementary School and writes multicultural children’s books featuring Latin American children living in the United States.  His goal is to create stories that portray minority children in a positive way, where they can see themselves as heroes, and where they can have hopes for the future.

Children and their families will be able to meet the author and receive a free autographed book, while supplies last (one per family).
The day will feature hands-on participation in crafts and various activities. CI students enrolled in Claudia Reder’s English 212 course, “Introduction to Children’s Literature,” will be reading aloud to children and helping children make watercolor bookmarks.

Students in CI Four Pillars chapter of Mortar Board National Honor Society and Tomorrow’s Teachers will be hosting a craft area and a creative writing station.

New this year, Philip Ross will be leading a music station where children can participate through sing-alongs.  Children will also have a chance to read dozens of books written and illustrated for the Young Authors’ Fair by K-12 students in Ventura County.

If a child’s school participates in the Ventura County Reading Association’s Young Authors’ Fair, then that child is eligible to write a book and have his or her teacher enter it to be displayed and read at the Celebration on April 25.

The event is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available on campus in specific lots. Once on campus, follow the directional signs to the designated parking lot. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Books will be limited to one per family while supplies last.
