Hosted By The Strathearn Historical Park & Museum

February 15, 2016
Strathearn Historical Park & Museum is hosting their annual Civil War Days and encampment event on Saturday, February 20 at 10am to 4pm and Sunday, February 21 from 10am to 3pm.

RSVP FOR THIS EVENT ON FACEBOOK

Entrance fees are as follows; $6 for adults, $3 for children from 5 to 12, under 5 free. Online tickets are just $5 per person and can be purchased HERE!

Kids and families are invited to step back in time and experience the sights and sounds as re-enactors show the soldiers’ way of life throughout a typical encampment day with Union, Confederate and civilian re-enactors.

This event will feature “Living History” presentations throughout each day which will provide insight into the daily activities of Americans on both sides who served in America’s greatest trial by fire the "Civil War".

At this two day event, “Suttler’s Row” merchants are offering everything from parasols to military regalia, a local dance troupe will show you how our ancestors put on a barn dance and the genteel ladies of Fort Tejon will demonstrate the splendors of a Victorian Tea.  You can even try making your own souvenir with a hand-cranked sewing machine from days gone by.

During the day the war will take center stage periodically.  Visitors can explore the camps of both armies where soldiers will demonstrate their weapons, methods of fighting and how they lived in camp.  Artillery and cavalry units will show how they drilled and fought.

New this year is the hospital tent, where visitors will be reminded that war is not all fun and games.  Skits include not only Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg address, but the President’s instructions of leniency to General Grant and a tableau of General Lee’s final surrender.  General Lee, who will be escorted to our own “Appomattox Courthouse” with appropriate fanfare by his loyal troops, will bid them a sorrowful farewell with soldierly dignity.

Students may join up with either army and experience a day in a soldier’s life.  Interview forms will be available for school kids and some local teachers have agreed to give them extra credit for interviewing a soldier.

A refundable deposit will get each student a simple uniform and a training rifle.  Drilling will be led by experienced re-enactors in uniform. Before leaving, each recruit will receive a signed honorable discharge, good for free admission to a future event at Strathearn Historical Park & Museum.
In addition to encampment activities, all buildings within the park will be open for touring, with docents available for historical information.

The Strathearn Historical Park and Museum is located at 137 Strathearn Place.
