CAMARILLO AAUW CREATIVE ARTS WORKSHOPS {Camarillo}

Affordable and Creative Workshops for Kids in Kindergarten to 8th Grade - Updated 4/6/2016

Creative Arts Workshop is a fun summer program run by the Camarillo branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW, held during the summer at a  local Camarillo Elementary School and this years program runs from July 5 thru the 22nd from 9am until noon Monday thru Friday.

The Creative Arts Workshop offers a variety of classes conducted by outstanding professionals / teachers in each area. Children will discover their unknown talents and expand their creative expression through challenging and exciting experiences.

At the end of the program there will be an OPEN HOUSE on Wednesday, JULY 20, 2016, and families will be invited to visit the classrooms and enjoy presentations of drama, music and magic.

Class selections are offered for children who will be entering KINDERGARTEN through EIGHTH grade in the next fall school year. (Some classes are available for adults, too!) Students may enroll in one or more classes, with a limit of 4 classes per individual.

This is an extremely popular program in Camarillo and to register you need to register in person on Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 9:00 to 11:30 am at the Camarillo Community Center on Burnley or for late registration on Tuesday, May 17 from 5:30pm. -7:00 pm. Be sure to bring the following items to registration:
  • Rough draft of your class schedule options 
  • Completed family emergency form from brochure – one per family 
  • Registration fees: cash or check – payable to: Creative Arts Workshop
  • In order to enroll, all fees and charges must be paid to “Creative Arts Workshop” at the time of registration; please note that fees are non-refundable.
Fees:
  • $15 registration fee per child (please note increase in this fee this year) 
  • $30 per 45 minute class
  • $60 per double class (1 ½ hour in length) 
  • Lab fees (please see individual class listings for variance)
It is suggested you get there early than registration time because you register based on a lottery system which begins at 8:45am on May 14th. Numbered tickets will be DRAWN AT RANDOM from 8:45 am until 9:00 am before registration begins, in front of the registration room at the Community Center. Registrants may then line up according to their numbered tickets. The next lottery drawing will include the next set of numbers according to the number of people who have come after that time. Only 2 sets of numbered drawings will take place. Registrants who come later in the morning may proceed to the end of the existing line for registration.

Kindergarten Classes: ADVENTURES in IMAGINATION  
  • Kindergarten classes are for double-periods and last 1 ½ hours.
  • You may sign up for one or two double-class-periods.
  • Class registration fees are $60 for each double-class period.
The program for pre-kindergarten (students going to be in Kindergarten this next school year) is done on a rotating schedule. The children will rotate through 3 classes, plus an outside time for play and a snack, every day.

The three classes will provide a variety of activities for your child. Miss Marietta will take the children to the “Land of Imagination” through Fairy Tales.” Miss Peggy and the children will explore literature, music and movement. Miss Stacy will provide “Creative Art Works.” The children will use their imagination to create both open-ended art activities and gently-guided projects. 

GLEE JR. (1st thru 8th Grade)
Do you like to sing? Join us as we learn to sing and move to fun, upbeat songs (Disney, Broadway, etc.) and then perform them for the Open House! We will go over proper vocal techniques, melodies, harmonies and choreographed movements for each song! So—sign up for our show choir class and have a blast!!

SPANISH IMMERSION (1st thru 6th Grade)
You will learn Spanish through FUN-filled active classes that include games, art, music and lots of movement. The class is taught in Spanish with English spoken only when necessary. The theme this year is “Aventura en el Campamento de Verano / Summer Camp Adventure”. The CAW students will feel like they are at summer camp with Cosmo and his friends, playing games and having fun!

QUILTING (5th thru 8th Grade)
Two Levels:
  • Beginning students will learn basic quilting skills, how to use a sewing machine and will make a strip quilted travel pillow. ** Beginning Students may take one class (45 minutes) or a double / 2-period class (1 ½ hours) 
  • Intermediate Students will make a apron quilt and need to have sewing machine experience or have attended beginning quilting. 
All classes will be limited to 15 students due to machinery!

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR (2nd grade thru adult)
Shawn McMaster teaches you how you can become a magician! Learn the basics of magic, plus a little history about famous magicians and tricks of the past. You will gain an appreciation for the art of magic as well as build personal confidence and dexterity.

FROM HOOPS to HOPSCOTCH (1st thru 4th grade)
Join us for some exciting and fun games to play outdoors. Activities will vary each day with a variety of materials…and water play fun!

CRAFTY PLANTERS (1st thru 5th grade)
Join us for fun, oudoor plant-inspired crafts! We will learn about plant life and grow our own flower friends. 

FOR BOYS ONLY OR JUST FOR GIRLS CLASSES
(Grade 2 and 3)
  • The Boys Class: You will have time to build, play and get into fun things without your sisters hanging about. We will have those activities here: to toss, to create, to connect…it’s here for you to experience!
  • The Girls Class: It’s a time of “sugar and spice and everything nice.” There will be sweet times to play those fun, girlie-games and have some quiet activities that allow us to dance about and have our own special fun!
GAMES, GAMES, GAMES (Grades 1-3)
Do you like to play games? In this class you will play many games that are easy to play, make and take home. This class will keep you and your friends entertained all summer long – and it’s a perfect way to add enjoyment to your family game night, too!

PUPPETEER IN TRAINING (Grades 1-8)
Socks and strings, balloons and things... Puppets can be made from many different materials. Join us in making new friends to take home.

JEWELRY MAKING (Grades 4-8)
Make jewelry for yourself or gifts using beads, stones, glass, clay and more. Learn techniques for wire wrapping, crimping and knotting.

CLAY PROJECTS  (Grades 4-7)
It’s back! Come have fun with different kinds of clay: some that will be baked in the kiln…and some that will air dry or even be made in a baggie…in this extremely hands-on, creative clay class. To protect their clothing, students should bring an old shirt that can get dirty! This class will be limited in number to 18 students due to room size and machinery.

CHESS (Beginners period 1, Advanced period 2 and 3 and period 4 for parents wanting to learn)
Learn how to play chess, learn some new tricks…or just come and enjoy playing chess. You will have a puzzle of the day to solve which involves new strategies. It will be a fun and thought-provoking class.

DANCE CLASSES (1st thru 7th Grade)
Do you enjoy Disney movies and music? Please join us for some fun Disney-themed dances! One dance will be performed at Open House…

HANDS ON MATH & SCIENCE (4th thru 6th grade)
Math and science is more than just learning from a book … and this is the place for those hands-on touch and do activities. Come on in and have some fun touching, experimenting --- and learning!

INCREDIBLE EDIBLES (1st thru 4th grade)
Yummy! It’s time to learn to make your own delicious treats…along with a few touches of manners & etiquette. Come and learn how easy – and how tasty – it can be to create some quick healthy and delicious snacks.

** PLEASE NOTE – There are many recipes that contain peanut butter, eggs, dairy and are not gluten-free!

SUMMER SCHOOL AT HOGWARTS : YEAR 10 (2nd thru 8th grade)
Ever want to be a wizard? Try on the Sorting Hat, take classes like “Potions and Charms”, and work with your house to take home the House Cup!

TRI-WIZARD TOURNAMENT (3rd thru 6th grade)
You’ve been chosen as a Tri-wizard champion! Come be sorted into schools, compete in the three tasks, and see if you have what it takes to bring home this year’s Tri-wizard Cup. No overlap with Hogwarts.

JEDI KNIGHTS and PADAWANS (1st thru 8th grade)
Have you ever wanted to be a Jedi? Create your own light saber and use it in battle. Enjoy Star Wars-themed crafts and games. Join with other Padawans and see if you have what it takes to be a Jedi!

MAKING MUSIC WITH FLUTOPHONES (1st thru 4th grade)
Join the fun! If you can tap your fingers, you can play the flutophone. Students will learn familiar songs as well as music fundamentals necessary for further instrument studies. Flutophone plus workbook will be included.

PIANO KEYBOARDING / MUSIC FUNDAMENTALS (4th thru 8th grade)
It’s easier than you think! This simplified quick-start method uses a variety of group activities to make learning to play the piano FUN! Classroom keyboards provided. Includes workbook.

LATCH HOOK & CROSS-STITCH - OH, MY! (4th thru 8th grade)
Learn the joy of needlework. This class to include a variety of needlework projects. No experience necessary! Students will make several fun projects and leave with a skill to create endless creative projects at home. ** Adults are welcome to take this class, too!

SUMMER FUN BY THE SEA (1st thru 4th grade)
An ocean-themed craft class where kids will enjoy a different craft each day. Come and have fun exploring fun projects about the ocean!

BE COOL WITH YOURSELF (4th thru 8th grade)
Discover your hidden talents and parts of yourself that make you UNIQUE! Learn to respect, understand and appreciate others. Join the “Giraffe Society” and hear about kids around the world, and what they do to make the world a better place. Use your imagination and experience joy through music, art, signing, writing and movement.
