The United Way’s Young Leaders Society of Ventura County is hosting a FREE event aimed at promoting healthy, active living for young people and to educate families in the community about the dangers of childhood obesity on Saturday August 4th at 9am in Oxnard.

The event will promote health and wellness through fun, effective, and practical ideas for youth of all ages, interests, and abilities. Activities include: Zumba, Martial Arts, Yoga and Core Fitness and include a FREE Nutritious lunch, Health Expo and Giveaways!
The 2nd Annual “Fun in the Sun” will take place at Oxnard Beach Park (1601 S. Harbor Blvd. Oxnard, CA 93035) from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Attendees may register upon arrival or register online HERE.

There is no cost to attend the event other than a small parking fee assessed by the park, and parents and youth of all ages are welcome. YLS has partnered with other community organizations to promote the healthy-living message at the event as well.
“Fun in the Sun” will engage kids in a multi-station workout course featuring activities such as yoga, Zumba-style dancing, martial arts, and core-strength building. A light breakfast will be provided, followed by the hour-long workout program, during which parents will have an opportunity to hear an educational presentation about nutrition and methods for incorporating healthy eating at home. A lunch featuring healthy alternatives to the usual “barbeque at the park” fare will be provided at the end of the event.
YLS Board Chairman David Perez believes he and the other members of the group can help address the growing need for kids and parents to become educated about the importance of implementing active living and healthy eating as a lifestyle.
“Studies show the obesity rate among children has nearly doubled in the last 10 years,” Perez said. “Obesity can cause a variety of health problems for kids as they grow to adulthood, including diabetes and heart disease. Youth-advocacy organizations like the Young Leaders Society can play a vital role in communicating the need to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity.”
