CAMARILLO BIRD MUSEUM OPEN HOUSE

This very private museum located in Camarillo is having their annual Fall Open House on Saturday October 9th from 10am to 4pm. This is a very special event as the museum is usually only open one day a month to the public and they limit how many people can go in at one time.

So get the kids and the family together and take a tour of this very exciting and very different museum in Camarillo that has extensive bird, nest, and egg collections, and... experience the atmosphere of a real research museum!

 

MORE ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology (WFVZ) or the Camarillo Bird Museum is a  non-profit research institution. Their mission is to obtain, protect, and manage ornithological collections in a manner that ensures their accessibility to researchers, educators, students, and the public, and to ensure that the materials are used in projects that contribute to the conservation of the world's wild bird species.

 

The collections of the WFVZ are composed of more than 190,000 sets of bird eggs representing approximately 4,000 species, more than 18,000 nests, more than 55,000 bird study skins, and a library of over 8,000 books and monographs on birds and natural history. The library also houses more than 400 bird and natural history journal serials, and a large collection of the field notes of collectors and scientists.

Demonstrations of museum egg preparation techniques will be presented at 11:30 and 2:30, and kids and adults are welcome to take part! They will have raffles will be held at 11:00 and 3:00, and a Silent Auction will be held all day.

 

DIRECTIONS

 

From south of Camarillo, take Hwy 101 to the Pleasant Valley/Santa Rosa Rd. offramp, and turn left at the end of the offramp, going back over the freeway. Follow Pleasant Valley west for 2 miles to where it crosses Lewis Road. Continue heading west on Pleasant Valley to the second street on the right,Calle San Pablo. (If you cross the railroad tracks, you have gone too far.) Turn right on Calle San Pablo.The Foundation is the fifth building up on the left (439 Calle San Pablo).

 

From north of Camarillo, take Hwy 101 south to the Las Posas Rd. offramp, and turn right at the end of the offramp. Follow Las Posas for 0.8 miles to the intersection with Pleasant Valley Rd. Turn left onto Pleasant Valley, and follow it east for 1.6 miles to where it crosses the railroad tracks and comes to a stop sign. Be careful of traffic crossing at this intersection, since it does not stop. Proceed east after the stop sign to the first left -- Calle San Pablo. Turn left here. The Foundation is the fifth building up on the left (439 CalleSan Pablo).
