The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) kicks off the 40th annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week starting May 19th organized around the theme "EMS: One Mission and One Team. To celebrate the Oxnard Fire Department has scheduled some Sidewalk CPR classes for the community.
In addition on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, is EMS for Children (EMSC) Day, a day set aside to focus on EMS response to children, child safety and injury prevention.
National EMS Week and EMS for Children Day encourages local communities and medical personnel are encouraged to focus their EMS Week activities on raising public awareness about the need for specialized emergency care for children.
- Thanking EMS and acute care professionals for the work they do on behalf of children is the goal of EMS Children's Day.
- Educating the broader health care community, as well as public officials, about the unique healthcare needs of children.
- Enhancing awareness among parents, caregivers, teachers, children, and other community members on how to prepare for and respond to a health care emergency involving a child and how to prevent childhood injury and illness.

Check out ACEP's new learning adventure game for children. This project was funded by the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency to teach children the basic principles of home disaster preparedness for a variety of scenarios including earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes and floods. LEARN "EMS" SKILLS IN OXNARD
The Oxnard Fire Department is encouraging the community to become part of the emergency medical response team by learning how to save a life. Research shows that bystander CPR can triple a person’s chance of survival following a sudden cardiac arrest.
On Saturday, May 25th, the Oxnard Fire Department will be teaching Sidewalk CPR. This is an opportunity for community members to learn how to:
- recognize when a victim’s heart has stopped
- call 9-1-1 to report the problem
- compress the chest using Hands-Only CPR
Firefighters will be on hand to teach the easy steps of Hands-Only CPR at the following Oxnard Fire Stations and times:
- 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Station 2 531 E. Pleasant Valley Road, Oxnard
- 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Station 3 150 Hill Street, Oxnard
- 6:00 – 7:00 pm Station 4 230 W, Vineyard, Oxnard
EMS providers include paramedics, emergency medical technicians, first responders, firefighters and police, some paid, some volunteer.
