Celebrate the start of Summer vacation with Republic Services of Oxnard, the Gull Wings Children’s Museum and the Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast as they host an event to help instill the very best green waste practices in youth during the “Be Wise, Be Green Summer Kickoff” event on Friday, June 21, from 9 a.m. – noon at the Del Norte Recycling and Transfer Station, located at 111 S. Del Norte Blvd. in Oxnard.

During the interactive event, Republic Services of Oxnard employees, Gull Wings, Girl Scouts, parents and children will have a chance to learn about important green waste facts. Guests can also participate in a fun drum circle by Drumtime facilitator John Lacques to help kick off the Summer Solstice.

Afterwards, children will have the opportunity to make unique recyclable crafts in the Creation Recycling Station inside the Del Norte Recycling and Transfer Station, take educational tours of the facility and learn about the importance of recycling with MRFy the robot.

Radio stations KVTA-AM and Live 105.5-FM will broadcast live throughout the event to encourage parents to bring their kids to the fun, one-day event. Lunch will also be provided by Fresh and Fabulous for children.

Also during the event, the Republic Services of Oxnard Green Team will go door-to-door in a Southside Oxnard neighborhood to help educate the community about the importance of reducing green waste.

Green waste that can be recycled include yard and tree trimmings, grass clippings, leaves, pine needles and unpainted lumber. Items that cannot be recycled include palm fronds, yucca, cactus, banana trees, trash bags, cardboard, plastic, rope, twine, food scraps, diapers, garbage, dirt, rocks, animal waste, glass and metal.

Republic Services works with the City of Oxnard as its partner. For more information on the Be Wise, Be Green Summer Kickoff for Kids event or to join the Green Team, contact Operations Manager Gus Sanchez at 805-278-8228.
