On Friday, October 24, Food Day, Ventura County Public Health (VCPH) will host the 4th annual Ventura County Food Day Community Celebration at two locations one in Oxnard and the other in Ventura.

As part of the national Food Day movement designed to encourage greater access to healthy, affordable and sustainable food, staff from VCPH’s Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (NEOP) program will provide an array of free educational and interactive activities for children and adults.

  • In Oxnard, the celebration will take place from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Camino del Sol Community Garden, located at the intersection of Garfield Ave., Camino Del Sol Rd. and Entrada Dr. At the Oxnard location, there will also be garden workshops for pre-school and elementary school children and the opportunity to tour the Pumpkin Patch & Maze built by garden volunteers.
  • The Ventura, Food Day events will happen from 2:00 – 5:30 p.m. at Catholic Charities, 303 North Ventura Ave.
Activities at both locations will include fresh produce distributions provided by FOOD Share, FOOD Share’s farm truck, a visual tool emphasizing the importance of growing backyard fruits and vegetables, healthy recipe food taste-testing and a local health and resource fair with representatives from dozens of community organizations.

“Food Day is a fun way to introduce the community to the joys of gardening and educate residents about the importance of eating a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables,” said Silvia Lopez-Navarro, NEOP Manager.
