REGISTER SATURDAY FOR CREATIVE ARTS WORKSHOPS

For Students in K-8th Grade

On Saturday, May 2nd from 9am to noon is the in-person registration date for all the wonderful Creative Arts Workshops you can sign your kids up this summer. If you are planning on attending be sure and arrive early at the Camarillo Community Center at 8:45am to receive your lottery number.

Creative Arts Workshops is a fun summer program run by the Camarillo branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), held during the summer at a local Camarillo Elementary School.

The program is for students in Kindergarten to 8th grade with high school students as Teen Aides. Kids attend Monday thru Friday from July 6th thru July 24th from 9AM to Noon and choose from 4 periods/classes. Each class costs just $30 and there is a $15 registration fee per child. Kindergarten classes are double periods and are $60.

There is a secondary registration date where you can sign up your kids for unfilled workshops on May 6 from 5:30PM to 7PM at the Camarillo Community Center. 

Here is a sample of classes available: (More are listed in the Enrollment Packet)
  • KINDER CLASSES- ADVENTURES in IMAGINATION: The program for pre-kindergarten (students going to be in Kindergarten this next school year) is done on a rotating schedule. The children will rotate through 3 classes, plus an outside time for play and a snack, every day. The three classes will provide a variety of activities for your child. Miss Marietta will take the children to the “Land of Imagination” through Fairy Tales.” Miss Peggy and the children will explore literature, music and movement. Miss Stacy will provide “Creative Art Works.” The children will use their imagination to create both open-ended art activities and gently-guided projects. 
  • MIXED-MEDIA ART: Picture yourself with the eyes of Van Gogh, Cassatt or Mondrian. If you don’t know these artists—after this class you will! Create mixed media pieces using pastels, painting, watercolors and more.
  • GLEE JR.: Do you like to sing? Join us as we learn to sing and move to fun, upbeat songs (Disney,   Broadway, etc.) and then perform them for the Open House! We will go over proper vocal techniques, melodies, harmonies and choreographed movements for each song! So—sign up for our show choir class and have a blast!!
  • SPANISH IMMERSION: You will learn Spanish through FUN-filled active classes that include games, art, music and lots of movement. The class is taught in Spanish with English spoken only when necessary. The theme this year is “Aventura en el Verano / Adventure in the Summer”, the kids and their dog, Cosmo, find a sunken treasure in the sea. You won’t believe you can have so much fun while learning a whole new language! 
  • QUILTING: Intermediate students will make a rag quilt and need to have sewing machine experience or have attended beginning quilting.
  • MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: Everybody loves magic…and now you can become a magician! Learn the basics of magic, plus a little history about famous magicians and tricks of the past. You will gain an appreciation for the art of magic as well as build personal confidence and dexterity.
  • FROM HOOPS to HOPSCOTCH: Join us for some exciting and fun games to play outdoors.  Activities will vary each day with a variety of materials…and water play fun! 
  • FOR BOYS ONLY: You will have time to build, play and get into fun things without your sisters hanging about. We will have those activities here: to toss, to create, to connect…it’s here for you to experience!
  • JUST FOR GIRLS: It’s a time of “sugar and spice and everything nice.” There will be sweet times to play those fun, girlie-games and have some quiet activities that allow us to dance about and have our own special fun!
  • GAMES, GAMES, GAMES: Do you like to play games? In this class you will play many games that are easy to play, make and take home. This class will keep you and your friends entertained all summer long – and it’s a perfect way to add enjoyment to your family game night, too!
  • THE ACTOR AND THE MIME: Bring out your inner Drama Queen in this performance-based class. Be a mime, put on a puppet show-be a star!
  • PUPPETEER in TRAINING: Socks and strings, balloons and things... Puppets can be made from many different materials. Join us in making new friends to take home.
  • JEWELRY MAKING: Make jewelry for yourself or gifts using beads, stones, glass, clay and more. Learn techniques for wire wrapping, crimping and knotting.
  • CLAY PROJECTS FOR THE YOUNG: It’s here!  Come have fun with different kinds of clay: baker’s, peanut butter, salt and saw dust in this extremely hands-on, creative clay class.  To protect their clothing, students should bring an old shirt that can get dirty!  
  • CHESS: Learn how to play chess, learn some new tricks…or just come and enjoy playing chess.  You will have a puzzle of the day to solve which involves new strategies.  It will be a fun and thought-provoking class.
  • EXPERIMENTING WITH MATH / SCIENCE GRADES 1-3: If you think math and science is just learning from a book … then you need to be here.  It’s a hands-on only class for fun, experiments and play.  There will be many different kinds of scientific activities to experience each day. 
  • HANDS ON MATH and SCIENCE for GRADES 4-6: Math and science is more than just learning from a book … and this is the place for those hands-on touch and do activities. Come on in and have some fun touching, experimenting --- and learning! 
  • INCREDIBLE EDIBLES: Yummy!  It’s time to learn to make your own delicious treats…along with a few touches of manners & etiquette.   Come and learn how easy – and how tasty – it can be to create some quick healthy and delicious snacks. ** PLEASE NOTE – There are many recipes that contain peanut butter!
  • FAIRYTALE EXPLORERS: Don your explorer hat and jump into the story! Each week we will explore a different fairy tale. Discover where the stories came from, listen to different versions of each tale, and have fun with related crafts. This year we will explore Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs and Cinderella.
  • SUMMER SCHOOL AT HOGWARTS: Ever want to be a wizard? Try on the Sorting Hat, take classes like “Potions and Charms”, and work with your house to take home the House Cup!> New crafts and fun!
  • TRI-WIZARD TOURNAMENT: You’ve been chosen as a Tri-wizard champion! Come be sorted into schools, compete in the three tasks, and see if you have what it takes to bring home this year’s Tri-wizard Cup. No overlap with Hogwarts.
  • MAKING MUSIC WITH FLUTOPHONES: Join the fun! If you can tap your fingers, you can play the flutophone. Students will learn familiar songs as well as music fundamentals necessary for further instrument studies. Flutophone plus workbook will be included.
  • PIANO KEYBOARDING / MUSIC FUNDAMENTALS: It’s easier than you think! This simplified quick-start method uses a variety of group activities to make learning to play the piano FUN! Classroom keyboards provided. Includes workbook.
  • TRASH to TREASURES: In this class we will “go green” by taking every day trash and turning it toys, games, costumes, jewelry, art, purses…and other fun things to enjoy! You will be amazed what exciting things you will create.
  • CLASSES FOR GIRL SCOUTS: The activities will focus on self-esteem, trying out new activities, working together, helping one another and leadership—some of the activities will also relate to other badges the girls can earn. They will learn about Girl Scout Traditions, play games and sing, sing, sing!
  • The PEACE PROGRAM: The PEACE Program is an empowering class for young women. Using photojournalism as the primary catalyst for confidence, we learn to create artistic newsworthy photographs and get inspired by our subjects who are stewards of our community. We uncover truths about women in media and society while we develop skills to enhance our future, build connections, confidence and talent.
