Macaroni Kid Reviews Circus Vargas Arlequin

LAST CHANCE TO SEE CIRCUS VARGAS IN SANTA BARBARA

By Harold Rosenthal, Elizabeth Rosenthal (age 10) and Victoria Rosenthal (age 7) May 25, 2015
Circus Vargas, America’s favorite traveling Big Top circus continues to thrill and enchant children of all ages with their new and amazing 2015 edition, ArleQuin, and if you missed the show last week at the Ventura County Fairgrounds you can still see it in Santa Barbara at Earl Warren Showgrounds on June 11-15.

This year's show features "ArleQuin," the story of a boys dreams of joining the circus. During the show when night falls, a myriad of colorful characters fill his sleep, among them, the magical ArleQuin, a harlequin who serves as both guide and friend and shows him the beauty, wonder and awe that await him under the Big Top.

Pre-Show
Be sure and arrive a half hour before the show for the funnest party of the show, the pre-show. Kids are invited to come into the ring (parents were asked to accompany kids 5 & under).  They had the kids form a conga line to enter the ring then had them do the limbo.  They gave each kid a peacock feather and telling them to balance them on end in their palms and their nose.  Finally they select one child to use a peacock feather and balance it for all to see.  Once the kids returned to their seats they threw huge rubber balls in to the audience and had the audience hitting them around. Then had the audience dancing to “YMCA.”  It’s a lot of fun and a great reason to get there early.

The Show
Circus Vargas is a circus with no animal acts in the whole show.  The show this year is called "Arlequin" and is based around the story of a young boy who falls asleep and dreams of joining the circus.

The show includes circus acts with an illusion. The illusionist did several amazing disappearing/escape acts which were absolutely breath taking.  The last one where spikes drop and he winds up on top is very impressive.

A few times during the night they grabbed members of the audience to do bits with the clowns.  These were hilarious.  At one point the clowns came dance with the audience at our seats.  Our favorite act was the two steel ring cages on which spin separately on an arm which spins it all in a big circle.  It works like a big rotational treadmill as the performers run and jump inside and outside the rings.

We also loved the motorcycles in the steel ball who this year they had a women standing in the middle of them.  The Tramp-wall was also a hit as they jumped on a trampoline and did tricks off the wall.  Of course everybody always loves the trapeze artists as well.

After the show, the performers met you on the way out to say “Hi” or take any photographs you desire.  My daughters and I had a blast.  It was a fun time for the whole family and I definitely think you should go see it.
